Cleaning Tarnished Jewelry

Cleaning Tarnished Jewelry

Who doesn't love a new piece of shiny, silver jewelry? It gleams, it sparkles and it looks truly luxurious. But, after time, sterling silver can get build-up and if not properly stored, become tarnished and gross. If the metal is truly sterling silver, there's an easy hack to restore its luster. Keep in mind, this will not work on silver plated materials (trust me, I learned the hard way).

Supplies

  • Salt
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Boiling water
  • Glass dish
  • Aluminum foil
  • Measuring cup - 0.5 cup
  • Measuring tablespoon

Directions

  1. Line a glass dish with aluminum foil
  2. Mix equal parts salt and baking, I use a tablespoon of each; pour into dish.
  3. Add jewelry
  4. Pour 0.5 cup vinegar over jewelry
  5. Add enough boiling water to cover the jewelry
  6. Let sit for 4 minutes
  7. When done, rinse thoroughly under running water
  8. Pat dry

Helpful hints

  • This solution is safe on gemstones, pearls and glass crystals.
  • This can be used on gold-filled and rose gold-filled components.
  • Make sure the silver metal is actually sterling silver or it will dissolve the plating.
  • If you're using this on our jewelry, feel free to email us to make sure the pendant is sterling silver. ALL our silver chains are sterling silver.
  • If the plated material is tarnishing, we recommend using a dry polishing cloth like the Connoisseurs Dry Cleaning Wipes.
